Grades 6-8

The Challenge:

Students will “distill” water from wet soil.

Concept:

Sunlight penetrates the plastic and heats the soil. The moisture in the heated soil evaporates and rises up to the plastic. The air outside cools the surface of the plastic, causing the evaporated moisture to condense. As the water condenses, it runs down the inside surface of the plastic and drips into the cup.

Objective: Students will:

• show how the sun’s energy can be used to extract fresh water from air and soil.

Distinguish between the forms of energy including heat, chemical, mechanical, and gravitational potential energy.

2 40-minute periods

2 Rocks
Brick
40 square inch piece of Plastic Wrap
Cup
