Sundial
The challenge:

Students will determine the time of day using the sun.

Concept:

Latitude determines the angle the sundial must be set at to correctly tell time.

(The gnomon cutouts are angles that reflect the number of degrees of latitude for average U.S. North and South locations.)

Objective:

Students will make a simple sundial to see how people kept time before clocks.

Understand the Earth’s place in the solar system and the universe.

Explain the relationship of the Earth’s motion to the day, season, year, phases of the moon, and eclipses.

Explain the relationship between the cycle of seasons and the tilt of the Earth on its axis.

Tag Board (1 square foot)
Ruler
Marker
Scissors
Glue stick
Sharp knife or other too
